Stay connected to Rice Resources while you travel or work off-campus
Check your calendar and email and voicemail messages over the Internet
Use these Rice web tools with confidence, but be cautious of where you log in when you are away from campus. Public Internet cafes are notorious locations for key-logger devices. Key-loggers save or transmit every keystroke you make; hackers and criminals can then steal everything related to --or accessed by-- the information you typed into the computer. Remember to logout and close the web browser before you walk away from any computer that is not yours.
- Webmail - login to the webmail tool and manage your folders, messages, etc.
- Webcal - login to the web interface for Oracle Calendar and manage your appointments
- Voicemail - check your messages from off-campus by dialing 713.348.2000 and entering your office extension and password.
Taking a computer with you? Things to check before you leave:
- VPN - required to access Rice resources from off-campus. Federal law requires showing your Rice ID to a Help Desk or IT support member and answering questions regarding your intententions for use before you can be granted a VPN account. Take care of this before you leave.
- Local backup - If your primary workstation is the laptop you are taking with you, copy all your files to the storage system in case your computer is lost or stolen.
- Leave official Rice data behind - Leave as much data on the Rice servers as possible to reduce the risk of sensitive Rice data being compromised through a lost or stolen computer, flash drive or mobile phone or PDA.
- Secure your laptop and data - Encryption can prevent intruders from breaking into your computer and stealing or using your data even if they have possession of your computer.
