Scenario: I'm a New Student

First, congratulations on your decision to come to Rice University! Check out the six-page handout, Campus Computing 101 (.pdf format), which is full of advice for new students on how to prepare or buy a computer to bring to Rice.

Getting Started

  • Personal Accounts and your NetID - In order to check your email and use other campus computing resources, you will first need to access your NetID (electronic ID for Rice) and set your password.
  • Protect your password and your computer - no one at Rice will ask for your password.  Delete every message that requests your password or other personal information. This type of email is called as phishing.
  • Email - check your email through the Internet.
  • Voicemail - check your voicemail messages from off-campus
  • Storage - save your data and files to a personal storage account or your department's shared directory.
  • Printing - around 6 cents per page.
Answers to the rest of your questions about everything IT at Rice (computers, software, printing, telephones, email, wired/wireless networks, etc.) can be found in IT Tutorials: https://docs.rice.edu/confluence/x/yQI1. .
